Dr. Dhrgam AL Kafaf

Chairperson of the Department of Natural and Applied Sciences

Dr. Dhrgam AL Kafaf currently serves as Chairperson of the Department of Natural and Applied Sciences at the American University of Iraq–Baghdad (AUIB), where he leads academic and administrative operations for the department while continuing to teach and conduct research as Assistant Professor of Computer Science.

Before assuming his current role, Dr. AL Kafaf played a key part in establishing AUIB’s Computer Science program and served as its Program Coordinator for multiple terms. He also co-founded the Faculty Senate and has been deeply engaged in academic governance, curriculum development, and student mentoring. His leadership has contributed significantly to program quality, accreditation readiness, and the university’s mission of academic excellence.

Prior to joining AUIB, Dr. AL Kafaf taught at Valencia College in Florida and Oakland University in Michigan, where he developed and delivered a wide range of computer science and software engineering courses. His professional experience extends to the automotive and technology industries, where he held engineering and research positions at Dura Automotive and Hyundai MOBIS, contributing to advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicle technologies.

Dr. AL Kafaf’s research focuses on adaptive systems, autonomous vehicles, machine learning, and computer vision. His scholarly work has been published in journals such as Computers & Electrical Engineering, Complex Adaptive Systems Modeling, and the International Journal of Advanced Technology and Engineering Exploration.

He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Oakland University, his M.Sc. in Computer Science from Lawrence Technological University, and his B.Eng. in Computer and Software Engineering from the University of Technology in Baghdad.
