Dr. Andrew W. Hassell

Assistant Professor

Before joining AUIB, he practiced law in the Office of the Missouri Attorney General for thirteen years, focusing his practice on felony criminal appeals, habeas corpus actions challenging felony convictions and sentences, and lawsuits filed against the Missouri Department of Corrections. Dr. Hassell worked on four high-profile death penalty cases on in trial courts and the Missouri Supreme Court, and, in addition, briefed and argued 17 additional cases in front of the Missouri Supreme Court and 72 cases in the Missouri Court of Appeals .

Dr. Hassell also briefed and argued 24 cases in the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, including nine cases in which the State of Missouri sought the death penalty. Dr. Hassell also briefed many of those cases in litigation in the United States Supreme Court. Dr. Hassell further represented the government in emergency litigation at all levels, including the Supreme Court, in the days and hours preceding the executions.

Dr. Hassell’s current research interests include appellate practice and procedure, post-conviction remedies in criminal cases, and criminal law in general.

Dr. Hassell earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and his juris doctor degree in law from Brigham Young University. He also holds a master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Delaware. He previously taught English composition and rhetoric at Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey.
