On the occasion of the “International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women,” and as part of the annual international campaign launched by UN Women, “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence,” the American Space at the American University of Iraq-Baghdad (AUIB) hosted a workshop organized by “Together to Protect the Human and the Environment Association,” in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and the “Tree of Life” charity institution, where officers from the Ministry’s Directorate of Family and Child Protection participated, contributing valuable presentations before the crowd of attendees.
“The protection of women is the protection of family and the country;” therefore, the protection of women is a social responsibility, the abdication of which means retarded social and economic development, said a representative of the “Tree of Life” charity institution, adding that Woman herself is the Tree of Life, and that his institution has taken upon itself to empower women in the various social and economic sectors, including the labor sector. For her part, Major Yusra Mizhir Eedan, of the Interior Ministry’s Directorate of Family and Child Protection, spoke on the historical background of the “International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women” (25th of November), elaborating on the various types of violence against women and their repercussions on the individual and societal levels, collectively culminating in “the obstruction of (social) development”, due to the disintegration of the basic social unit, the Family, and its grave consequences for individuals, as well as for society as a whole.
