In collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), the American University of Iraq-Baghdad (AUIB) organized a seminar on “Medical Students’ Engagement in Addressing Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR),” where Iraqi Ministry of Health and WHO officials addressed a crowd of students and faculty of AUIB’s medical colleges.

AUIB’s Vice President for Enrollment Services and Student Affairs, Dr. James Pounder,  acknowledged the important role of “friends” such as WHO in the rapid development of the university since the year 2021, considering the present event “a testament to our developing of great friendships” to the benefit of students, whose learning experience is not limited to the classroom, but is indispensably supported by extracurricular activities such as the various seminars, conferences, and workshops that AUIB organizes and hosts.

The seminar contributes to “forming a community of knowledge, practice, and advocacy on AMR and its impact on people’s lives, society, and development,” said WHO Representative and Head of Mission in Iraq, Professor Georges Alfred Ki-Zerbo, who highlighted the need for a comprehensive view and approach, one that addresses the phenomenon among humans as well as animals in food production systems, also bolstering preparedness for epidemics and supporting countries’ programs in this regard.
