The College of Law at the American University of Iraq-Baghdad (AUIB), in collaboration with the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displacement, held a seminar on illegal immigration and the prospects of incentivizing and facilitating the return of highly skilled and talented Iraqi immigrants to their home country. Among the participants were the Iraqi Minister of Migration and Displacement, Ms. Evan Faiek Jabru, the Chief of Mission to Iraq of the International Organization for Migration, Mr. Giorgi Gigauri, and the Representative of the United Nations Population Fund, Ms. Rita Columbia.

The seminar discussed the root causes, effects, and potential solutions to the phenomenon of illegal immigration along three themes: the legal, the humanitarian, and the security-centered; and a number of relevant recommendations were formulated, to be addressed to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. In this context, a framework was proposed for cooperation between AUIB’s College of Law and the Ministry of Migration and Displacement, for the purpose of reviewing and amending existing laws related to immigration, or proposing new legislation, as well as holding workshops aimed at the formulation of concrete proposals to catalyze the return of Iraqi competencies and talents.
