Job Summary: As a simultaneous interpreter at AUIB, you will play a critical role in facilitating effective communication across languages. You will primarily interpret from the Iraqi dialect to English, ensuring clear and accurate transmission of spoken content in various settings, including meetings, conferences, and events. Your expertise will contribute to the smooth functioning of the university’s operations and its engagement with international stakeholders.

Job Location: AUIB Campus, Airport Road, Baghdad, Iraq.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Simultaneous Interpretation (SI): Provide real-time interpretation while the speaker is talking, typically from a soundproof booth. Listeners will hear the interpretation through translation devices.
  • Consecutive Interpretation (CI): Interpret spoken content after listening to the speaker for a certain period, used primarily in smaller meetings such as business discussions and training sessions.
  • Liaison Interpretation: Facilitate communication by interpreting a few phrases at a time, commonly used in public service interpreting and smaller meetings.
  • Convert concepts from the source language into equivalent concepts in the target language, maintaining the original style and tone.
  • Compile technical terms and information into glossaries and terminology databases for future use.
  • Apply cultural knowledge to provide accurate and meaningful interpretations.
  • Perform document translation, review, and proofreading to ensure accuracy and quality.
  • Operate interpretation and translation equipment, including microphones, headsets, and software, to ensure effective communication.
  • Provide language support during meetings, workshops, and events, both in-person and through remote technologies.
  • Assist with translating and editing departmental communications, documents, and presentations.
  • Maintain high standards of accuracy, professionalism, and confidentiality in all interpretation and translation work.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher with equivalent experience in translation or interpretation.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Proven ability to comprehend and accurately interpret spoken content in multiple languages, including English and Arabic.

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • Strong listening skills and the ability to assimilate speakers’ words quickly, including specialized jargon and acronyms.
  • Proficiency in building specialist vocabulary banks.
  • Experience using interpretation equipment such as microphones and headsets.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct research and prepare in advance for meetings, lectures, and assignments.
  • Adherence to a professional code of ethics, ensuring confidentiality and impartiality in all work.
