Job Summary: The library cataloger performs a wide variety of complex technical works and functions related to descriptive and subject cataloging in preparation of bibliographic and item records for monographs, journals, and other library materials. Performs original and complex copy cataloging of library materials in all languages and formats in accordance with the new cataloging rules, cataloging standards, and local practices.
Job Location: AUIB Campus, Airport Road, Baghdad, Iraq.
Areas Of Accountabilities
- Develop and maintain knowledge of emerging cataloging and classification theory and practice.
- Catalog print and non-print materials using the Library of Congress Classification System.
- Catalog and process documents in compliance with the Technical Section guidelines, policies, and practices.
- Maintain knowledge of current trends in professional cataloging rules and standards.
- Reports catalog problems and questions to the Head of Technical Section.
- Search OCLC for MARC records, locate and match records to items needing cataloging.
- Perform copy cataloging and downloading records in several languages from OCLC or LC catalogs and compare material in hand to OCLC-derived MARC record.
- Perform authority records maintenance according to RDA rules for authorities.
Perform bibliographic control to ensure reliability, consistency, and integrity of the library catalog.
- Participate in developing and implementing catalog maintenance projects, such as re-cataloging and reclassification of records in the framework of retrospective project to shift from AACRII to RDA rules for bibliographic and authority records based, or the move to BIBFRAME and linked data environment.
- Transliterate or Romanized Arabic title records using the ALA Romanization Rules.
Assign descriptive metadata for digital objects in the library system and in the Digital Institutional Repository and databases.
Minimum Education And Experience
- BA degree in Library Science or a related field from an accredited university.
- Good knowledge of Arabic and English. Knowledge of French is desirable. Other languages are advantages.
- Ability to respond and adapt to changing priorities and conditions.

- Knowledge and proficiency in the use of computer programs and applications of computer, mainly library systems.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to multitask and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment.

- Professional appearance and demeanor.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and confidentiality.
- Must be fluent in English and Arabic while other languages are an advantage.
