Position Title: Government Relations Officer
Job Location: AUIB Campus, Airport Road, Baghdad, Iraq.
Reports To: Executive Director of University Relations
Job Description:
The American University of Iraq, Baghdad, is seeking a skilled and professional Government Relations Officer to join our team. This role is crucial in establishing and maintaining strong relationships with local government bodies, including various ministries and governmental offices. The Government Relations Officer will ensure effective communication between the university and government entities, manage government relations activities, and ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and regulations.
The successful candidate will be organized, possess exceptional communication skills, and maintain the highest level of professionalism in all interactions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Relationship Management: Develop and sustain productive relationships with local ministries and government bodies on behalf of the university.
- Liaison Duties: Serve as the primary point of contact between the university and government offices, ensuring clear and effective communication and collaboration.
- Legislation Monitoring: Stay up-to-date with local legislation and regulations that could impact the university, and promptly inform the Director of University Relations and the President of any changes.
- Issue Resolution: Address and resolve issues or concerns raised by local ministries or government departments related to the university.
- Reporting: Prepare and deliver weekly reports to the Director of University Relations and the President, detailing discussions and meetings with governmental bodies.
- Ad-Hoc Duties: Assist with additional duties as assigned by the Director of University Relations to support the university’s government relations initiatives.
Knowledge and Experience:
- Master’s degree in Business, Law, Communications, or a related field.
- 2-5 years of experience in a similar role, preferably within a higher education institution or a government-related position.
- Comprehensive knowledge of state and university policies, regulations regarding public events and disclosures, and an understanding of governmental processes.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Office and social media platforms.
- Fluency in both English and Arabic is mandatory.

- Strong communication skills in both English and Arabic.
- Ability to engage effectively with external stakeholders, including government officials.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Self-motivated and confident, capable of working independently and handling pressure.
- Proven experience as a Government Relations Officer or in a similar government relations role.
Position Requirements:
- Ability to travel within Iraq as needed for meetings with government officials.
- Willingness to work outside of standard office hours when required.
