Following her participation in this year’s Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, law student at the American University of Iraq-Baghdad (AUIB), Afnan Farazdaq, supported by AUIB’s College of Law, participated in a Summer Program course at the American University of Washington, D.C.
Afnan attended a course on “Women, Human Rights, and International Law,” designed to enhance the understanding of key issues such as relevant international conventions, gender-based discrimination, reproductive rights, and the impact of culture and religion on women’s rights. Taught by Professors Vivianna Weisman and Christie Edwards, the course covered critical topics, including the United Nations’ Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the relevant concept of “intersectionality”, human trafficking, and women’s participation in peace negotiations. The valuable insights Afnan gained emphasized the need for the effective implementation of laws to achieve gender equality and social stability.
