The American University of Iraq-Baghdad (AUIB) proudly announces that eleven selected staff members have successfully completed a transformative professional development immersion at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education and Human Development, as part of the university’s Staff Excellence Fellowship (SEF) program. The eleven AUIB fellows’ participation in the intensive Train-the-Trainer experience marks a significant milestone in the Fellowship’s evolution from professional development delivery to the cultivation of internal institutional capacity.
The week-long immersion was designed as an applied professional learning experience rather than a traditional workshop series, combining interactive sessions, institutional visits, engagement with Vanderbilt faculty and leadership, collaborative design work, daily reflection, and final presentations. Participants explored how leadership development and professional learning can be translated into meaningful institutional practice, while also strengthening the growing partnership between AUIB and Vanderbilt’s Peabody College.
Beyond the Vanderbilt campus, the group visited Tennessee State University (TSU), where they engaged with university leadership and explored approaches to student success, enrollment management, academic support, and institutional partnerships. The group also visited the Nashville Entrepreneur Center, where participants focused on innovation, presentation, and communication skills, emphasizing the importance of understanding stakeholders and translating ideas into action.
This investment in AUIB staff reflects the university’s commitment to developing institutional excellence from within. As the fellows return to AUIB, the focus will shift from learning to application, with plans to refine and implement the next SEF cohort based on the work completed at Vanderbilt.
