The American University of Iraq-Baghdad (AUIB) proudly announces that it has received a $2.1 million grant made possible by the generous support of the American people through the United States Department of State to aid AUIB’s efforts at revolutionizing higher education underscoring Iraq’s National Education Strategy. This funding will establish two cutting-edge initiatives: the Center for the Advancement of Higher Education in Iraq and the Innovation Lab for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Engineering.
The grant represents a great step toward fostering academic excellence, empowering women in leadership, and driving innovation in the fields of education and engineering. In partnership with Vanderbilt University, AUIB will harness these funds to support the development of its College of Education and Human Development, paving the way for a brighter future with Iraq’s next generation of leaders, scholars, and innovators.
Fostering Excellence in Higher Education
AUIB’s new Center for the Advancement of Higher Education in Iraq will transform the educational landscape by providing tailored leadership and faculty development programs for higher education professionals across the country. The center will focus on promoting governance, academic integrity, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. At least 50% of program participants will be women, furthering AUIB’s commitment to gender parity.
Through this center, the university will deliver professional development, mentorship opportunities, and a fellowship program for academic leaders, contributing sustainable improvements in Iraq’s higher education system. In partnership with Vanderbilt University, AUIB will ensure that Iraqi institutions benefit from the latest global best practices in academic leadership and governance.
Innovation Lab for Artificial Intelligence
In response to growing demand for cutting-edge technology education in Iraq, the grant will also establish the Innovation Lab for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Engineering within AUIB’s new College of Engineering. This lab will feature advanced AI and digital engineering technology, providing state-of-the-art learning opportunities for students, particularly women, for networking, collaboration, and skill development.
The Innovation Lab will not only support AUIB’s AI curriculum but also serve as a hub for AI policy development in Iraq, in collaboration with national and international stakeholders. The lab will position AUIB as a leader in AI research and education in Iraq, empowering students to engage with emerging technologies and prepare for the global workforce.
AUIB’s Role in Iraq’s Educational and Technological Future
The initiatives made possible by the $2.1 million grant will cement AUIB’s role as a beacon of quality American-style education in Iraq, advancing key priorities outlined in the U.S.-Iraq Strategic Framework Agreement. Through strategic initiatives focused on governance, gender equality, and technological innovation, AUIB aims to elevate the quality of higher education in Iraq while contributing to the nation’s long-term socioeconomic development.
“This funding will allow AUIB to offer unparalleled opportunities for Iraq’s students, faculty, and academic leaders, while also positioning Iraq as a key player in the region’s AI and higher education advancements,” said AUIB President Dr. Michael Mulnix, adding: “We are grateful to the United States Department of State for their continued support and trust in AUIB’s vision for the future of education in Iraq.”
