Dr. Robert Oliver Martin

Assistant Professor of Education and Human Development

Dr. Robert Oliver Martin is an Assistant Professor of Education at the American University of Iraq – Baghdad. With nearly two decades of teaching experience across the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia, he has dedicated his career to English language learning, teacher education, and curriculum innovation.

He holds a Doctorate in Education from the University of Sheffield in the UK, as well as an LLB in Law, giving him a unique interdisciplinary perspective on education, culture, and society. Dr. Martin is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. His work focuses on student-centered learning, intercultural competence, and academic English, and he has led major initiatives in developing undergraduate teaching pathways, assessment frameworks, and professional development programs.

Dr. Martin has taught in universities in Iraq, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and Thailand, and has collaborated internationally including co-leading a Faculty Teaching Excellence Fellowship with Vanderbilt University. His research explores how culture shapes language learning, and he has also secured U.S. Department of State funding for literacy awareness projects in Iraq.
