The College of International Studies (CIS) at the American University of Iraq-Baghdad (AUIB) proudly announces that the Georgetown Security Studies Review published an article by CIS student, Mr. Alabbas Fadhil Alsudani, under the title, “A Pivot From Lebanon: Israel’s Renewed Focus on Syria.”

“The rapid fall of Assad and the redoubling of Israel’s efforts in Syria suggest that Israel’s involvement in Syria went beyond merely seizing an opportunity—it actively contributed to shaping the outcome,” wrote Mr. Alsudani in his article where he traced the chain of major events, starting from Israel’s invasion of southern Lebanon towards the end of last year to its invasion of south-western Syria and destruction of the country’s military assets, analyzing the dynamics at play between the various geopolitical players involved. He concluded that “(Israel’s) actions, while often framed as defensive or strategic, reveal a deliberate effort to destabilize the Assad regime… countering Iranian and Hezbollah influence, and exploiting the fragmented Syrian state to establish strategic leverage.”

It is noteworthy that Mr. Alsudani had published several articles related to Middle East affairs with different publications such as the Yale Review of International Studies and the Oxford Middle East Review. The College of International Studies at AUIB is proud of its distinguished students and their achievements, and it reaffirms its commitment to support them every step of their way to realizing their full potential.
