The College of Law (CoL) at the American University of Iraq-Baghdad (AUIB) demonstrated its excellence and academic leadership by becoming the first Iraqi institution to participate in an international competition specialized in media law, further solidifying its leading position in the academic legal landscape and contemporary legal fields.
CoL took part in the regional rounds of the Monroe E. Price Media Law Moot Court Competition, organized by the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights at the University of Oxford from the 3rd to the 10th of February 2025. The College’s student team was the first Iraqi team to participate in this competition since its inception, and its members shone in this prestigious contest that focuses on complex issues in media law and the responsibility of digital platforms_ a rapidly evolving legal field that significantly impacts the international legal landscape.
AUIB’s CoL team was awarded the “Jonathan Blake Spirit of the Competition Award,” typically given to the team that demonstrates exceptional qualities of sportsmanship, integrity, and dedication in competition, especially in the context of legal competitions like moot courts. This award highlights values that go beyond the technical skills required for success, and is often granted to those who excel in fostering the spirit of the event. This achievement highlights the team members’ exceptional performance in legal research, oral advocacy, and the formulation of legal arguments, showcasing the depth of their legal knowledge and their mastery of analytical and advocacy skills, also reflecting CoL’s academic excellence at nurturing the exceptional skills of the next generation of legal professionals in Iraq.
The team consisted of the students Mohamed Nabil Mohamed Hussein, Mohamed Moyed Jabar Shah Ali, and Ali Mustafa Abdul Redha, overseen and coached by Dr. Khansaa Mohammed Jasim, Associate Dean of the College of Law.
