The College of Law (CoL) at the American University of Iraq-Baghdad (AUIB) has launched a pioneering program in sports arbitration, the first of its kind in Iraq, under the auspices of the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council. Under the leadership of the esteemed Dr. Faik Zidan, this program reflects the Council’s commitment to enhancing the Iraqi legal system by supporting initiatives that contribute to the development of the next generation of legal professionals. The program is led by Judge Mohamed Ali Mahmoud Nadim and Dr. Khansaa Mohammed Jasim, the Associate Dean of CoL, ensuring the delivery of high-quality training content based on superior legal expertise.

The first sessions of the program began on October 1, 2024, and are scheduled to continue until November 26, 2024, with training sessions held every Tuesday from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

The opening ceremony took place at the Iraqi Center for Settlement and Sports Arbitration in Baghdad, attended by Judge Mohamed Ali Mahmoud Nadim, Chairman of the Board of the Iraqi Center for Settlement and Sports Arbitration and a member of the Second Appeals Commission at the Karkh Court of Appeals, Dr. Zaid Fares Al-Salman, the head of the center, Dr. Khansaa Mohammed Jasim, Associate Dean of AUIB’s CoL, and several CoL students.

This program represents a direct response to the pressing need to develop national competencies in the field of law and sports arbitration, an area of increasing importance both regionally and internationally. Through this program, CoL aims to bridge the significant gap in specialized expertise in Iraq, ensuring that participants are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to engage in arbitration for sports disputes according to global standards.

With this initiative, AUIB’s CoL strengthens its leadership in legal education and reaffirms its commitment to offering specialized programs that meet the growing needs of the Iraqi community in advanced legal fields, providing the necessary legal competencies to work in this specialized legal domain.
