As part of its commitment to enhancing its international presence and solidifying its academic standing in the field of international arbitration, the American University of Iraq-Baghdad (AUIB) sponsored the biennial international conference on the role of national courts in international arbitration and contributed to its proceedings. The university was the only academic institution to sponsor the event internationally, alongside major law firms and other international institutions.

The conference was held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, on the 4th and 5th of December 2024, and is one of the leading international events specializing in international arbitration. It was organized by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA), the International Federation of Commercial Arbitration Institutions (IFCAI), and the Cairo Regional Center for International Commercial Arbitration (CRCICA).

AUIB was represented by a delegation of six students and their Academic Advisor- Associate Dean of the College of Law, Dr. Khansaa Mohammed Jasim. The conference provided the delegation with a valuable opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge about the interaction between international arbitration systems and national courts, enhancing their skills and performance in future competitions, especially since the participating students are members of the team that qualified for the knockout stages of the International Commercial Arbitration Competition in Saudi Arabia.

This sponsorship reflects AUIB’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its position in the international academic arena and to develop and empower the promising legal talents in the field of commercial arbitration, while also preparing them for national recognition. The conference serves as an important platform that brings together international arbitration experts, featuring discussion sessions on the latest developments and best practices, as well as training workshops to enhance the practical understanding of arbitration issues. This participation affirms the university’s commitment to providing quality educational opportunities for its students, strengthening its academic presence, and solidifying its position as a leading institution in the field of law and international arbitration.
