Dr. Imad Bachir

Dean of Libraries

Dr Imad Bachir has been the Dean of Libraries at AUIB since March 2021. He is leading AUIB libraries to enhance the research and teaching processes at the University as well as to serve the Iraqi research and academic community at large. In addition, AUIB libraries are constantly working on the development of the digital resources and print collections required to improve research, teaching and to keep abreast with all institutional and programs accreditation requirements at AUIB.

Prior to his appointment Dr Bachir was director of the Faculty of Information at the Lebanese University for two rounds from 2002 until 2007 and from 2018 until 2021. In between, he assumed the position of Director of Libraries at Qatar University form 2012 until 2017. Before that Dr Bachir was Manager of Iraqi journalists’ training program for three years between 2007 and 2010 at the Institute for Strategic Studies (Dirasat Iraqiya) in Beirut. In 2008, he was appointed by the Lebanese government as member of the Supervisory Commission for the 2009 Parliamentary Elections and was hired afterwards in by the UNDP as an election monitoring expert to produce the election report of 2018. He was the Chair of the IFLA MENA Regional Division Committee from July 2021 until August 2023.

Dr Bachir obtained his B.A. in Library and Information Studies from the Lebanese University in 1985. Afterwards, he joined the University College London (UCL) to receive his master’s degree in 1989 and his Ph.D. degree in 1995 in the same specialization. He worked for Al-Hayat Arabic daily Newspaper in London as Research Editor from 1988 until 1999 and in Beirut from 1999 until 2001. Dr Bachir Commenced university teaching at the Lebanese University in 1996 and was member of the Scientific Council of the Higher Institute of Doctoral Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences between 2019 and 2023 and a member of the Lebanese University Academic Council in 2017. He obtained his professorship title in library and Information Management and Media Technology from the same University in 2008.
