Job Summary: The managing editor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the university press and ensuring the timely and efficient production of high-quality publications. This role involves managing editorial staff, coordinating with authors and external vendors, and maintaining the overall editorial and production workflow.
This position will report directly to the Vice President, Corporate Engagement.
Job Location: AUIB Campus, Airport Road, Baghdad, Iraq.
Areas of Accountability:
Editorial Management:
- Supervise editorial staff, including assigning tasks, providing guidance, and conducting performance evaluations.
- Oversee the acquisition and evaluation of manuscripts or book proposals for publication.
- Coordinate the peer review process and make decisions on manuscript acceptance.
- Work closely with authors throughout the publication process, providing feedback and ensuring adherence to press guidelines.
Production Oversight:
- Coordinate with production staff to ensure timely editing, formatting, and preparation of manuscripts for printing or digital distribution.
- Manage the production schedule and monitor progress to ensure that publications meet deadlines and quality standards.
- Collaborate with designers, typesetters, and printers to ensure the successful production of books, journals, and other publications.
Administrative Duties:
- Manage the budget for editorial and production activities, including allocating resources and tracking expenses.
- Maintain communication with authors, reviewers, and other stakeholders to address questions, provide updates, and resolve issues.
- Handle administrative tasks such as contract negotiation, rights management, and permission clearance.
- Assist in the development of marketing and promotional strategies for publications.
Quality Control:
- Ensure publications adhere to press guidelines, editorial standards, and industry best practices.
- Review proofs and final copies to identify and correct content, formatting, and design errors.
- Monitor reader feedback and make recommendations for improvements to future publications.
Postition Requirements:
Minimum master’s degree in Humanities.
Several years of professional experience with:
- A strong understanding of editorial processes, including quality control: planning, and resource tracking.
- Extensive knowledge and skill in acquisition, including evaluating, and securing content for publication.
- Network and communication building with scholars, and experts, attend conferences, and build relationships within academic communities.
- Strategic thinking skills aligning publications with the university and press’s publishing vision and strategy.
- Knowledge of current academic publishing trends, including competing works, emerging topics in university, and scholarly needs.
